Wedding Venue in Vadodara
A 1936 Gaekwad palace in Alkapuri, where the whole wedding fits on one property

What makes Shivmahal Palace a wedding venue rather than a hall?
Shivmahal Palace is a heritage wedding venue in Alkapuri, Vadodara, built in 1936 as a Gaekwad royal residence. A full wedding runs on one property: haldi and mandap on the open lawn, the ceremony in the air-conditioned hall, and the reception outdoors with the lit palace behind the stage. It holds 700 to 800 seated and up to 1,200 floating.
Most families in Vadodara are not choosing between a venue and a hall. They are choosing between running the wedding across two or three places, or running it in one. That decision shapes the day more than any other: two venues means two setups, two decor budgets, two lots of parking and a convoy of relatives driving across the city between the ceremony and the dinner.
A Full Wedding Day, in Order
Morning, haldi on the lawn. Messy by design, and the grass takes it without anybody guarding a floor. The trees on the compound throw shade across a good part of the lawn through the afternoon, which matters for a function that runs in daylight.
Midday, the couple and family change
Three guest rooms on site cover the couple, the bridal party getting ready and elderly relatives resting between functions. Not a guest list, and we say so plainly: a wedding where guests stay over belongs at a resort.
Afternoon, the baraat
It enters through the main gate off Old Padra Road and comes down the drive, which gives the procession an actual run with the band and the horse rather than a cramped turn in a car park. Guests arriving at the same time park inside the grounds.
The ceremony
Mandap on the lawn, or the pheras indoors in the air-conditioned hall if the date is outside the winter window or the family would rather sit in the cool. Both spaces are on the same property, so this is a choice made close to the date rather than a booking made months earlier.
Evening, the reception
The stage goes against the palace. After dark the lit ochre facade is the backdrop, and it is the single most photographed thing at every wedding held here.
Choosing Your Date: the Vadodara Wedding Season
The season here runs November to February, and it runs then for a reason that has nothing to do with tradition: those are the months a Vadodara evening is comfortable outdoors all night with no cooling and no tenting. Every rupee that would have gone on climate control goes into decor instead.
Saturday dates inside that window go six to eight months ahead, and the auspicious dates go first of all. If your muhurat falls outside the season, the air-conditioned hall carries the function and the lawn becomes optional rather than essential. What the lawn does not have is tenting, so a monsoon date needs planning around rather than hoping through.
What Actually Decides a Wedding Venue
Families tour venues and compare lawns. Then they book, and discover the three things that decide how the day feels were never on the tour.
The seated number, not the floating number
Every venue quotes the larger figure. Once a stage, a mandap and buffet counters are placed, the comfortable seated number lands 30 to 40 percent below it. Ours is 700 to 800 seated against 1,200 floating, and we quote both.
Whether your caterer is allowed in
Catering is the largest single line in a wedding budget. In-house-only venues remove your ability to negotiate it. Outside caterers are welcome here and our staff coordinate the counters and service on the day.
Where the guests put their cars
A hundred vehicles park inside the gate, valet-attended. Guests who spend their first ten minutes hunting for space on Old Padra Road arrive irritated, and that shows in the photographs whatever the decor cost.
Guests From Out of Town
Alkapuri is the middle of Vadodara, not the outskirts. That is roughly fifteen minutes from Vadodara Junction and twenty from the airport, and it puts the venue walking distance from most of the city hotels a wedding party books. Families flying relatives in feel this on the day: no convoy down a highway, no forty-minute gap between the ceremony and the dinner.
Everything is at ground level, lawn and hall alike. A third of most guest lists is over seventy, and that single fact is worth more to them than any amount of decor.
A Heritage Venue, and What That Means in Practice
There are two genuinely historic wedding venues in Vadodara rather than event grounds built for the purpose: the Lukshmi Villas estate and this one. Shivmahal Palace was built in 1936 for Shivajirao Gaekwad, third son of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, later became the residence of Prince Udaysinhrao Gaekwad, and has stayed in the family since.
What that buys you is a backdrop you are not paying to build. The ochre stone, the deep verandas and the proportions of the hall are original, and lit at night they do the work a decorator would otherwise be quoted for. What it does not buy you is scale: if the guest list runs past 1,500, an open plot on Waghodia Road will serve you better, and we would rather say so now than at the booking.
Decor, Catering and House Rules
Bring your own caterer and your own decorator, or use JJ Events & Decor, run by the same family and familiar with every sightline on the property. Two generators cover lighting, sound and the DJ. Two washroom blocks, men and women, each with two to three compartments.
Alcohol is not permitted. Gujarat is a dry state, and any venue or planner suggesting otherwise is proposing something illegal rather than something discreet.
The Spaces, in Detail
This page is about the wedding. For the property itself, space by space: the open wedding lawn, the air-conditioned heritage hall, and the full capacity, parking and facilities specification. Still shortlisting? We compare fifteen Vadodara wedding venues, including the ones that beat us.
Check your wedding date
November 2026 to February 2027 dates are booking now. Tell us the date and the guest count and you get availability, the terms and a written quote the same day. Booking is a call, not an online checkout, and the terms stay flexible.
